Or maybe it’s because Street View was launched the same time in 2007 as I moved across the world from those winding English lanes to San Francisco. I had a new world to explore, and I had Pegman as my trusty man-on-the-street.
Street View was launched at first in nine cities, including San Francisco, and was almost immediately met with controversy.
After some slightly dubious images made their way onto the platform — including a woman in her underwear, sunbathers, and identifiable men leaving strip clubs — in May 2008 Google gave people the ability to flag images to be pulled down. They soon automated the blurring of license plates and faces from Pegman’s omnipotent gaze and later allowed residents to request that their homes be blurred out.
If my forays into Street View are a rabbit hole, the Pegman is my carrot. He’s the drag-and-drop icon that acts as the primary user interface for interacting with the map. At first he was an eyeball, but Google found moving an eyeball around a map not very appetizing for users. Then came Pegwoman, then, um, Tofu Man (really) and then they finally settled on the current iteration.
If you move Pegman a little too quickly he’ll fly around and swing pendulously over the globe. When you release the click he drops to the map, and 2D suddenly opens up to a panoramic view from the ground.
Mermaid Pegman swinging over the Hawaiian coast
Google Street View
On special occasions, Pegman dresses up for you: Around the coast of Hawaii he grows a mermaid tail; around Loch Ness he becomes a cute little nessie in a cap; and if you should venture towards Area 51, he becomes a UFO, hovering over the sand, waiting to show you the mysteries of the Nevada desert.
