Yellow Medicine East pitcher Hunter Wilke’s payoff pitch was off target. Lenz raised his arms in triumph because the winning run had been forced home. Adrian/Ellsworth, after dropping the first game of two at the home park of the Milroy Yankees, had won Game Two 4-3 and, with it, a berth in the Class A state tournament.
Lenz’s at bat was weird from the start. Early in the count, he felt a pitch brush the front of his jersey, and he pointed it out to the home plate umpire. But the umpire didn’t agree. Instead, he called the pitch a strike.
“I could feel it hit my jersey, but I don’t know,” Lenz said later. “He said it was a strike. … I was down in the count, and then he (the pitcher) couldn’t find the strike zone. Then it was three-and-two and I was thinking swing if it’s close. Just swing if it’s close. I couldn’t believe it. The moment was crazy.”
Crazy, too, some might say, that the Dragons could qualify for the state tournament (June 15-16 in St. Cloud and June 18 at Target Center) at all. They entered the section tournament as the sixth seed from the south. Streaks of wildness on the pitcher’s mound and untimely errors in the field haunted them during the regular season, but they played well enough in the double-elimination sectional to face Yellow Medicine East as the only unbeaten squad. Hence, on championship night Thursday, the Sting needed to beat A/E twice to make state. They barely did it in the first game, 3-2, but couldn’t quite get the job done in the second game.
Lenz said the Dragons’ confidence was low coming into the section tournament.
“We did not think we were even going to make it past the first game, honestly. And then we won the first game and we just had a lot of energy,” he said.
“We thought we could make it far, but we had to keep it together. Because in the middle of the season we kind of fell apart. But we brought it back at the end of the season,” Lenz continued.
