John J. Watkins, The Times Cereal, Central Elementary School, Portage
In the culmination of a breakfast cereal collection, students and staff at Central Elementary School encircled the hallways at the school watch a domino-style toppling of over 1,300 cereal boxes. The event was one of the twice-a-year donations done each year at Central to benefit the Portage Township Food Pantry. “Cereal is a staple at our pantry,” said Joe Kasper, president of the Portage Townphisp Food Pantry. Students and their families were the major contributors of the cereal. And It was not just a food drive. Lessons in the classroom related to math facts, cause and effect, and sugar content in cereal were tied into it as well, said Connie King, Title I teacher at Central. “It was really a team effort of kids, parents and staff,” King said. The kids were tremendous.”
