Captain Russ Knapp (850-653-5072) reports, “When somebody tells you, they have seen everything just tell them they haven’t seen the weather on St George Island where it can go from a drought to a monsoon in 24 hours. After having no rain in what seemed forever, we have received over 8 inches since last Sunday with more to come. Needless to say, this hasn’t been a good fishing week in the bay or offshore as everybody pretty much found a place to hide out and stayed dry. Don’t abandon hope as the weather this weekend is supposed to revert to a normal summer pattern with seas running 2 to 3 feet and winds of 10 to 15 mph.
“Offshore, before the weather stopped the fishing Capt. Clint Taylor (850 370 6631) was putting really nice Red Snapper and Gag Grouper in his box with some good Kingfish to top things off. Capt. Clint suggests spending a little time and catching some live baits on your way for the best action and don’t forget the chum to get the Mangrove up away from the Red Snapper.
“In the bay, Capt. Dan Fortunas (850 980 0101) is finding a few Trout and some nice Flounder around the docks on the bayside of SGI. Capt. Dan says live bait is king but a nice fresh shrimp will work as well if you fish it on the bottom with a light sinker and a two-foot fluorocarbon leader. The big thing right now is look for clean water and stay away from the river mouth until things calm back down.
“Tip of the week — there are a ton of new boat owners and visiting boat owners in the area right now and their knowledge of courtesy and rules of the may not be up to speed. BE CAREFULL and assume nothing as the boat or life you save may be yours!”

Captain Kevin Lanier, (KC Sportfishing 850-933-8804) tells us, “Fishing continues to be pretty awesome offshore as we enter another week of the Red Snapper season. Water temperature is right about 82 degrees so, all the conditions are right.

“Now the weather is a different story. As Tropical Storm Claudette passing through the Gulf is pretty stirred up. Kings are around and biting. We caught two fish around 27 pounds and two black fin Tuna with a combined weight of 48 pounds. Always put that flat line out when weather allows for it because it pays off big. Red Snapper are biting about live and dead baits from as shallow as 15 feet under the boat to just off the bottom. 6/0 to 10/0 Extra strong hooks are needed.
“Groupers seem to be a little more picky. Live bait or Butter flied baits are getting them. Look for live, natural bottom and work that area. This trend should continue up to the next full moon. Watch the weather because we are in the Thunderstorm season and they can build up quickly Now is the time to get on the water. Be safe and enjoy.”
