After the Monday deadline, the petitions will be sent to the Jefferson County Voters District, which will take a fine-tooth comb to verify signatures and throw out any that are found to be invalid.
This week, the firefighters have been working to collect signatures during lunch hours at the Neches River Wheelhouse because they cannot ask for signatures while on city property or during work hours. They also are providing more information on their Facebook page about the signature drive. State law prohibits city or city employees from using taxpayer money to fund campaigns for or against a ballot item.
The voter referendum actually is the vision of a group of now-retired firefighters who established the Port Neches IAFF L3713 nearly 25 years ago and acquired civil service for its firefighters around 1996.
When Hebert became president in 2017, he wanted to finish what they started, especially when other local fire associations asked to compare their contract to Port Neches’ nonexistent document.
“We have an excellent working relationship with our city, and this will be able to grow on that and build our working and professional relationship between each other,” Hebert said. “Some of the things that we would like to see in the future is trying to secure what we have now. We don’t have a lot of complaints as far as pay and benefits, it’s mainly and to protect fire fighters.”
Groves Local 1905 President Haden Groves said he plans to submit his department’s petition by Thursday. In an email he described a “great relationship” with the city and commended Fire Chief Lance Billeaud.
In a statement emailed to the Beaumont Enterprise, Grove said most police and fire departments are union and have collective bargaining that enables them to negotiate a contract with their cities. He did not say how many signatures the department needed.
“We believe that if we are successful in gaining collective bargaining and binding arbitration, then we will continue to be the best and most professional fire department out there,” Grove stated. “Also, (the fire department would) be able to continue to hire and retain the caliber of professional firefighters that we have had for years.”
